Yesterday afternoon I made an unplanned visit to my 89 year-old mother and was able to give her an actual bone-crushing hug. I had to be careful I didn’t literally crush her bones. It was beyond wonderful. I am wishing everyone on the planet will get to squeeze someone they love in the flesh just as quickly as it is safe for them. We are all so in need of being pulled into the loving embrace of our people. As I was leaving her house she placed this beautiful quilt in my arms. In the fourteen months that she has been alone in her home, social distancing and not hugging anyone, she has been making these beauties - her Quarantine Quilts. She has finished eight so far and she’s still going. Finishing half-finished ones, starting new ones, and giving them away as fast as she makes them. She says, I’m not getting any younger, I have to use up my stash before I go toes up. Spoiler alert - she couldn’t use up her stash if she had a thousand years to live. She says often she knows exactly who a quilt is for as soon as she picks a fabric, but just as often she doesn’t know who they will live with until she has sewn the last stitch. I am so grateful this beauty gets to live with me.
